The Secret Doctrine Authors, Titles and Magazines List

QUICK LINKS TO:   Authors & TitlesMagazines

Introduction

The Secret Doctrine has many hundreds of references: authors, editors, compilers, book titles, articles, and names of magazines.  It is not always clear where they come from and with what they are connected.  A large number are from writers who were well known in Blavatsky’s time.  But there are a great many who are not generally known.

Sometimes there are spelling problems or typos which make searching more difficult.  These are often the last names of authors which are the same, but may in fact represent two or more different authors without first names to identify them.  For example, the name Bunsen (SD 1:435):

Bunsen was right in admitting for Egypt an antiquity of over 21,000 years

When the name is mentioned again (SD 1:528), it refers to a different author:

Bunsen . . . described the respective lengths of luminous waves

It also happens that the titles of books or magazines are not complete or fully correct, or are indicated by just part of the title, which can also make searching very difficult or even impossible.  For example, the following passage (SD 2:369) ends with the one-word title “Egypte”:

Creuzer . . . wrote: “We . . . feel surprised when hearing talk of the Spirits of the Sun (“Egypte,” pp. 450 to 455.)

But there is no book by Creuzer with such a title.

For this reason an “Author and Title List” was compiled for the names of all the authors and the titles in the SD, together with a listing of the magazines that are mentioned.  Under the authors one will find books and articles by these authors, and also entries where these authors are mentioned in various sources of the SD references.  Titles of books and articles from magazines mentioned in the SD are preceded by a dash, or directly follow the author’s name. Titles or names that do not appear in the SD are enclosed in brackets.

For example, here is the entry that identifies the Bunsen who wrote about Egypt:

Bunsen, [C. C. J.] von

Egypt’s Place in [Universal] History

Followed by the entry that identifies the one who described wavelengths:

Bunsen, [Robert W.]

in Winchell, World-Life

In the entry for Creuzer, we find the German book and its French translation:

Creuzer, [Friedrich]

— [Symbolik und Mythologie der alten Völker] (French tr. Religions de l’Antiquité)

And this French translation of Creuzer’s book appears again in the entry for “Egypte”:

Egypt”/“Egypte [“Religion de l’Égypte”], a chapter in Creuzer’s Religions de l’Antiquité (v. 1, ch. 5)

In many places in the SD, there is subject matter that refers to an author without any indication of a book title or article title by that author.  But in “Secret Doctrine References” various titles have been found that mention the author when dealing with the same subject matter.  For example:

Anaxagoras of Clazomenae

in Blavatsky, Isis Unveiled

in Enfield, History of Philosophy

in Plato, Dialogues, tr. Jowett (Phaedo)

Where the name of an author in the SD is incorrectly spelled or unrecognizable because of phonetic transfer from a foreign language, the “Author & Title List” shows the name of the author as it appears in the SD, followed by a correction in brackets, and then the titles by that author follow with an indication where the name can be found in the “Secret Doctrine References.”  A good example concerns the name Danville (SD 2:394 fn.):

See for these traditions . . . Danville’s Mémoires.

The entry for Danville in the “Author & Title List” shows the author’s correct name, as well as the correct title:

Danville [Bourguignon d’Anville, J. B.], Mémoires [(Œuvres de D’Anville) Mémoire et Abrégé de Géographie Ancienne]

in Bailly, Lettres sur l’Atlantide (fn. Danville, géog. anc.)

When the “Author & Title List” shows an entry for a book title, the reader is referred to the author, where more information is given.  Incorrect titles have the correct title in brackets, followed by a “See” indication:

China Revealed [China Review].  See McClatchey.

With regard to the first and middle names of an author, when these are mentioned in The Secret Doctrine, then those names are given in the “Author & Title List.”  If the author’s name appears in the SD with only his initials, then those initials are given in the listing.  And if no first names or initials are given, the author’s initials are enclosed in brackets.

Blavatsky sometimes uses abbreviations for titles of books and magazines, and both abbreviations and full titles of publications may appear for the same title. In such cases, both abbreviations and the full titles are given in the “Author & Title List,” and the reader is referred to the author.  And here are two examples:

Anthrop./Anthropogeny.  See Haeckel

Hypoth.  See Newton

Following the general listing is a separate list of magazines mentioned in the SD, with indications as to where they are mentioned, with corrections, along with the articles that are referenced in the SD.

Finally, this “Authors & Titles List” is a work in progress and will be expanded and amended when new information is found.
